NOUN
A Noun is a word used as the name of a person , place or thing.
ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ, സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ, വസ്തുവിന്റെ പേരായ ശബ്ദം – നാമം
Type of Nouns
1.Proper Noun:
Name of a specific person place or thing..(പ്രത്യേക വ്യക്തിയുടെ, സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ, സാധനത്തിന്റെ പേര്)
Eg: Ram, Sita, India, Pacific Ocean
2.Common Noun:
Name of common things.
Eg: Boy, Girl, Country, Ocean etc.
3.Collective noun:
Collection of some persons or things and represented as singular.
Eg: Class, Herd, Army, Team etc.
4.Abstract Noun:
Usually the name of a quality, action or state
Eg: Quality – goodness, kindness, wisdom
Action – laughter, movement, hatred
State – childhood, youth, slavery
(The name of art and science is also treated as abstract Noun.)
Eg: grammar, music, chemistry etc
5.Materialistic Noun:
Name of materials with which other products can be produced.
Eg: Gold, Silver, Cotton, Wood etc
9.Countable Noun:
The names of objects or people that we can count.
Eg: Pen, Apple, Sister, Doctor etc.
7.Un countable Noun:
Name of things that we cannot count but only measure.
Eg: Milk, Oil, Sugar, Honesty
(Uncountable noun കള് plural form സ്വീകരിക്കാറില്ല
Indefinitive articles ആയ a/an ഇവ uncountable nouns ന് മുമ്പില് ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല

Noun കള് 4 തരത്തിലുള്ള Gender (ലിംഗം) ല് ഉള്പ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു
1.Masculine Gender : പുരുഷ ശബ്ദത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു
Eg; Boy, Lion, Hero, Cock-sparrow……….
2.Feminine Gender : സ്ത്രീലിംഗ ശബ്ദത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു
Eg: Girl, Lioness, Heroine, Hen-sparrow
3. Common Gender : സ്ത്രീ വിഭാഗത്തിലോ,പുരുഷവിഭാഗത്തിലോ ഉള്പ്പെടുത്താവുന്നവ
(May be male/female)
Eg: Parent, Child, Friend, Baby, Energy…….
4.Neuter Gender: സ്ത്രീ വിഭാഗമാണോ പുരുഷവിഭാഗമാണോ എന്ന് വേര്തിരിക്കാന് സാധിക്കാത്തവ (Neither male/female)
Eg: Book, Pen, Room, Tree ……….
Nouns – Number
1.Singular – ഏകവചനം (One in number)
Eg: Boy, Girl, Cow, Tree …….
2. Plural -ബഹുവചനം (More than one)
Eg: Boys, Girls, Cowes, Trees …….
Noun – Rules
ചില നാമ ശബ്ദങ്ങള് Singular ആയി മാത്രമേ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുള്ളൂ. അവയ്ക്ക് plural form, ഇല്ല. ഇവ subject ആയി വരുന്ന sentence കളില് Verb – singular ആയിരിക്കണം
Eg: Advice, Scenery, Information, Mischief, Stuff, Poetry,
Evidence, Language, Baggage, Machinery, Furniture, Cash, Money, Equipment, Alphabet, Hair, Bread, Jewellery etc
1. .Children are prone to making mischief’s (X)
Mischief’s – is wrong. Mischief – is correct
2. I saw beautiful sceneries in painting exhibition (X)
Sceneries – is wrong. Scenery – is correct

ചില നാമങ്ങള്plural ആയി മാത്രമേ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുള്ളൂ. ഇവ subject ആയി വന്നാല് plural verb ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്
Eg: Cattle, People, Police, Infantry, Gentry, Brethren, Polity, etc.
1.There was no gentry in function. (X)
Was – wrong were (PL) – correct
2.Police has been deployed all over the route (X)
Has been (SR) – wrong have been – correct

ചില നാമ ശബ്ദങ്ങള് (രോഗങ്ങള്, പഠനവിഷയം, പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ പേര്, രാജ്യങ്ങളുടെ പേര്, തുക, ദൂരം, ഭാരം എന്നിവ യൂണിറ്റായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുക) singular Verb സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു
Eg: Mathematics, Physics, Measles mumps, News, Billiards, A fifty rupees, Five kilos, Six kilometers etc.
- Mathematics is an important subject in school syllabus.
- No news is good news.
- Measles is infectious.
- Billiards is my favorite game

ചില നാമങ്ങള് singular എന്നു തോന്നുന്നു എങ്കിലും plural ആയി ഉപയോഗിക്കുകയും അവയെ പിന്തുടര്ന്ന് plural verb വരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു
Eg: Bellows, scissors, Tongs, Pincers, Alarms, Trousers, Annals, Proceeds (sale), Riches, Nuptials, Chattels, Vermin. എന്നാല് ഇവയ്ക്കു മുന്പ് ‘a pair of’ വന്നാല് singular verb മതിയാകും
- Riches do many things
- Vermin destroy(PL) our property and carry(PL) disease.

ചില നാമ ശബ്ദങ്ങള് singular ആയും plural ആയും ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ഇവയോടൊപ്പം singular verb ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കാം .
Eg: Swine, Sheep, Deer, Cool, Trout, Salmon, Aircraft, Species, Wages. (Pair, Dozen, Gross – when used after numerals)
- Wages of sin is death.(SR)
- Wages of workers have raised (PL)

Collective Nouns singular ആയും plural ആയും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.Collective noun കള് ഒരു യൂണിറ്റായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാല് singular ഉം എന്നാല് അവ ഒരു യൂണിറ്റല്ലാതെ (ഏകമല്ലാതെ) വന്നാല് ുplural verb ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കുക
Eg:
- Our team is the best one.(√)
- Our team are trying their new dresses today.(√)
- A committee is formed for the purpose.
- The committee express(PL) difference of opinion

ഒരു സംഖ്യയെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിശേഷണം ഒരു നാമ ശബ്ദത്തിനു മുന്പില് വന്നാല് ആ നാമം (Noun) Plural ആകാന് പാടില്ല
Eg:
1. He is a twenty years old boy (X)
He is a twenty year old boy. (√)
2. Twenty Kms walk is a long distance (X)
Twenty Km walk is a long distance (√)
3. Five members committee is wrong
Use five ‘member’ committee

ഒരേ നാമ ശബ്ദങ്ങള് ഒരു preposition ന്റെ സഹായത്താല് ഒരുമിച്ച് ഉപയോഗിച്ചാല് ആ നാമങ്ങള് singular ആയിരിക്കണം
Eg: Town after town has been devastated.
Rows upon rows of pink marbles are to the eyes. (x)
Row upon row of pink marbles is to the eyes. (√)

Apostrophe – Non living things നോടൊപ്പം ഉപയോഗിക്കരുത്
Living things അല്ലാതെ രാജ്യങ്ങള്, അളവുകള്,സമയം (Nations, Measures, Time) എന്നിവയോടൊപ്പം Apostrophe(‘s) ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്
Eg:
Table’s wood (X) Wood of the table
American’s problem(P) Nature’s law (√)
A meter’s length(P) A Kg’s sugar (√)
Rule : 10
Two apostrophe can not come together in a single sentence. ഒരു വാക്യത്തില് രണ്ട് apostrophe അടുത്തടുത്ത് ഉപയോഗിക്കരുത് .
Eg:
I visited John’s and Mary’s house twice but found the couple absent (X)
I visited John and Mary’s House twice but found the couple absent (√)
